Comparing Light Modifiers with Portraits

Monday, July 01, 2019 | By: Keepsake Photography

Over the course of 17 years doing portraits, I have collected numerous light modifiers or 'soft boxes'. I never tried them all on at once comparing them because this takes time and I am busy!  However, I know that we need to experiment and learn by doing. So I asked my daughter to just sit there for me for 2 hours while I changed lighting angles, modifiers and set ups.  I documented it all because what good is knowledge if it isn't shared?

I realize that blondish hair without a strip light, looks brown.  Blondes like their highlights to pop.

The bigger the light source the softer the spread. This was true as the starfish was a better transition of the 3:1 lighting ratio than the 2' octabox.

The 4x6 Larson was even a softer light across her face but with less ratio and less drama. Great for families and children. I also use the constant light on this Hybrid for newborns.

I know I did not like the clam shell set up. It was too much work for that extra catch light and it was a challenge not to shine it up her face.

So yes, I need all these light modifiers for different reasons.  My favorite set up for portraits is the starfish, reflector and strip light for her hair.

Hope this helped!

Jen

I used the Sweetlight Bender light as an eye lighter and placed the 2ft Octabox as a beauty dish above. You will see the clamshell lighting pattern in the eyes.
